Hey guys, I'm back. Once again, I've been away for a prolonged period of time with the only explanation being 'life caught up to me.' But now I've got the update I've been waiting all summer to write.
Back. To. School.
My first official day of school is tomorrow, September 8th. But I did have orientation Monday the 31st and Thursday the 3rd. And yes, those two days were in person. I'm going to talk a little bit about those days and then go into my expectations for this coming week. Next week I'll tell you if my expectations were met.
Some background, orientation was the first time I was in school since March 9th. That's a little less than 6 months. Almost half a year. And honestly, it felt really good to be back. I don't think I've felt this excited for school since I was in 3rd grade or something.
I'm a senior now, which means I get to drive to school. I don't have to take the bus and can leave a lot later (I'm the first bus stop {or was} and I had to sit on the bus while it picked up everyone else in my town. Hence, a longer drive). I've gotten a lot better at driving and my parking spot isn't bad so I'm pretty set on that end.
Our first orientation day was spent doing grade activities and learning the new rules that come with Covid. I could not stop talking to people. It just felt really nice to talk to people I haven't seen in literally months.
Oh, fun fact! I'm pretty sure I'm the first student to be treated in the new nurse's office. Yep! Day 1 and I'm already hurting myself. Not really. I just got stung by a bee but I had to get it checked out by the nurse in case I had a reaction (I did not).
But enough about the bees (it was actually a wasp but no one really cares). Monday was grade stuff and Thursday we met our teachers. Our classes were split in half to keep students safely separated and when you're not in class you're doing something productive somewhere else. Still waiting on how that's actually going to work out this week. I like all my teachers and I'm mostly in the second half of classes, which would mean first half lunch and that's all that matters, really.
Now, our school's policy with Covid is mostly virtual with 9-10th graders going in person on Tuesdays and 11-12th graders going in person on Thursdays. We have 3-4 classes a day (new schedule) and they're pretty long. Teachers will be Zooming in from their classrooms and if we have mixed classes then the students in person would be with them.
It's all still pretty confusing to me but I'm confident my school will get the hang of it. We did when virtual started last year. That being said, I'm fully expecting this week to be extremely chaotic. It's everyone's first time using a new schedule, new online platform, and new hybrid system. I'd be shocked if everything went according to plan. But hey, that's just life.
Ultimately, my expectations are not high but I know that whatever happens this week, it's going to be interesting. And it's all going to work out in the end.
See you next week with an actual explanation of what happened on my first week of senior year. Until then, here's to seeing you guys in person every day eventually.
